I am an artist and maker, drawing on the skills handed down to me by my ancestors—boat builders, carpenters, seamstresses, farmers, and homemakers. In my artistic practice, labor is essential. Every piece I create carries the mark of both my hand and my mind.
My work is craft-based, a woman’s work. I incorporate textiles, sewing, ceramics, printmaking, and photography to create sculptures and installations. These pieces are about memory—true, painful, joyful, or idealized—in an attempt at self-preservation. My work explores social, cultural, and political themes such as women’s body image and autonomy, my immigration story, and the experiences of my community.
I weave through the histories of my immigrant grandmother and mother, both seamstresses, and the strong shoulders on which I stand. The objects I create are the archaeological evidence of my hands.
