This year marks the 40th anniversary of Ana Mendieta’s untimely death. Since 2023, I have been
researching and creating work to honor her legacy, and I hope to continue this project with NYLAAT.
Mendieta’s ritualistic performances and videos deeply resonate with me. As two Latina photographers
uprooted from our native countries, I feel a profound connection to her exploration of displacement and
identity. This inspired projects such as La Flor de Ana Mendieta, Siluetas en Azul, and Las Banderas de

Mendieta, which reflect her influence on my practice.
In Siluetas en Azul, I create life-sized cyanotypes that honor Mendieta’s earth-body works. Using the sun to
expose silhouettes connects the body to the land, echoing her methods. By challenging boundaries of
scale, process, and display, my work continues her dialogue on the body’s relationship to nature,
transforming photography into a collaborative act with light, earth, and time.
