Edgar MozaMoza
My work examines the experiences of mental illness within the Latinx community through a resourceful and sustainable approach. Instead of relying on the dark and violent color schemes often associated with mental illness, I take a vibrant approach, using primary colors to evoke memories of childlike wonder and whimsy.
My work also challenges societal norms surrounding masculinity, gender, and the intersection of religion and queer identity. I repurpose recycled materials—newspapers, magazines, and various discarded objects—giving them a second life. By doing so, I aim to challenge the notion of inherent deficiency tied to things deemed no longer useful, drawing a parallel to the societal impulse to stigmatize those perceived as “different,” “defective,” or no longer “valuable.”
